Richard Gray, M.D.


Richard J. Gray, M.D. is the Medical Director of the Sutter Pacific Heart Centers. He has been a cardiologist since 1975 completing his Fellowship in Cardiology from Cedars of Lebanon Hospital in Los Angeles California. Prior to joining the Sutter Pacific Heart Centers he was the of Chief of Cardiology for Regions Hospital, St. Paul, Minnesota from 1996 to 2001 and the Chairman of the Department of Medicine at the University of North Dakota School of Medicine from 1992 to 1996. From 1982 to 1992 he was the Director of Surgical Cardiology for Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles and the Medical Director, Heart Transplant Program at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center from 1988 to 1990.

Dr. Gray received his Medical degree from the University of Texas Medical School in San Antonio, completed his internship at the University of Vermont in Burlington, and his residency at Sepulveda Veterans Hospital in Sepulveda, California. Dr. Gray is Board Certified in Internal Medicine and Cardiovascular Disease with licensure in California, North Dakota, and Minnesota. He has held appointments as Professor of Medicine at the University of California School Medicine at Los Angeles, University of Minnesota and also University of North Dakota School of Medicine. He has acted as principal investigator on several cardiac research programs and has authored numerous publications and book chapters.

Richard E. Shaw, M.A., Ph.D., F.A.C.C, F.A.C.A.


Richard Shaw is a distinguished scientist recognized internationally for his work in medical research, database development and biostatistics. He is currently Director of Research, Quality and Education for the Sutter Pacific Heart Centers at Sutter Health in San Francisco, California. From July of 1991 to May of 2003 he served as Director of Research and Operations at the San Francisco Heart Institute at Seton Medical Center and was associated with the Heart Institute since its inception in 1983. He directed the Daughter’s of Charity National Cardiac Database Data Coordinating Center at the Institute from1992 through 1998. Dr. Shaw is a Fellow of the American College of Cardiology and serves as chair of the Scientific and Clinical Support Subcommittee which is responsible for the development of version 3.0 of the ACC national cardiac database. He is currently a member of both the Research and Publications Development Subcommittee and the National Cardiovascular Data Registry Task Force for the College. He serves on the Database Steering Committee of the California State Society of Thoracic Surgeons. Dr. Shaw is also a Fellow of the American College of Angiology and has been editor-in-chief of The Journal of Invasive Cardiology since 1989. In addition, he serves as an editorial consultant to several major cardiovascular journals.

Dr. Shaw received his Ph.D. degree in Medical Research and Biostatistics from the Graduate Division and School of Medicine at the University of California, San Francisco, where he received the Robert E. Harris award for Distinguished Research in 1983. He is also board certified in Nuclear Medicine Technology by the National Nuclear Medicine Technology Certification Board, with over 10 years of clinical experience in Nuclear Medicine. Dr. Shaw has been a co-investigator on many clinical trials and has published over 200 articles and book chapters on catheterization intervention, cardiac surgery, longitudinal assessment of medical outcomes, and management of medical information. Dr. Shaw has been a consultant to cardiac programs around the country and has lectured extensively on development of cardiovascular research programs, statistical methods and analysis, design of medical databases and risk adjustment methodology.
